El Salvador (/l saelvdr/ (listen); Spanish: el salao, meaning “The Saviour”) is a country in Central America. El Salvador, formally known as the Republic of El Salvador (Spanish: Repblica de El Salvador), is a Central American country. Honduras borders it on the northeast, Guatemala on the northwest, and the Pacific Ocean on the south. San Salvador is El Salvador’s capital and largest city. The population of the nation is expected to reach 6.8 million in 2021. [4]

The Lenca[12] (after 600 AD), the Mayans[13], and finally the Cuzcatlecs were Mesoamerican nations that ruled the region historically.

[15] Early Olmec presence in the first millennium BC is also suggested by archaeological monuments. [16] The Spanish Empire acquired Central America at the beginning of the 16th century, bringing it into the Viceroyalty of New Spain, which was controlled from Mexico City. The Viceroyalty of Mexico, on the other hand, had little to no say in the affairs of the isthmus, which was colonised in 1524. The Spanish proclaimed the area the Captaincy General of Guatemala in 1609, which comprised the territory that would become El Salvador until its independence in 1821. It was forced into the First Mexican Empire, then seceded and became part of the Federal Republic of Central America in 1823. El Salvador became an independent state after the federation disbanded in 1841, and subsequently created the Greater Republic of Central America with Honduras and Nicaragua, which lasted from 1895 to 1898. El Salvador had chronic political and economic instability from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries, marked by coups, revolts, and a series of authoritarian regimes. The Salvadoran Social War, which lasted from 1979 to 1992 and was fought between a military-led government backed by the US and a coalition of left-wing guerrilla organisations, was the result of persistent socioeconomic disparity and civil unrest. The Chapultepec Peace Accords brought an end to the hostilities. A multiparty constitutional republic was founded as a result of this negotiated agreement, and it still exists today.
